BDO '06 a reflection
Monday, Feb. 06, 2006
Hiya folks. Its monday and my ears are still ringing.
Why you ask?
Friday was a very loud day, for it was the Big Day Out in Adelaide.
Little old Adelaide came alive with the summer touring festival on its second to last show in its nationwide tour.
I sound like a music journalist don't I?
Well, I made a later entry into the day compared to previous years, got to the show grounds in time to see Gerling. After that caught a bit of Magic Dirt.
Managed to grab some lunch and a beer and headed back to the stands to see Mudvayne. Not really my cup of tea, but it was entertainment. Wolfmother was on next so had to get a decent vantage point in the stands. I have to say that after all the hype that has been generated over them in the past months, they definitely lived up to it. If you get a chance, they have a few tracks in the iTunes US store or you can have a listen on their myspace profile. They sorta sound like another group or two you may have heard before.... yes?
After Wolfmother it was the Adelaide hip hop crew of The Hilltop Hoods who are definitely a stage show unto themselves. After seeing those guys it was off to catch up with a few mates and have another few drinks before catching Shihad on one of the side stages. Somewhere before Shihad finished I headed back over to the main stage to see The Living End start. For the rest of the evening we were pretty much transfixed to that side of the stage and saw Franz Ferdinand, Iggy and the Stooges and The White Stripes (in that order) for the rest of the night.
Franz Ferdinand were pretty good considering that I have only really listened to their album a few times. You could tell that some of the crowd were just along for the ride as I don't think they have been to oz before, let alone Adelaide.
The White Stripes were amazing, by far the best act of the day. Although I am not a big fan their stage presence and the fact that they belted out most of the better known hits made it a worthwhile performance. I avoided the Boiler Room this year after the efforts and crush to see The Chemical Brothers last year.
It wasn't a late night, but after a walk from the show grounds into Rundle street I was home by 1am. Aren't I a good boy?
So now I present you a collection of pictures...

So that would be it. All over for another year. I am really starting to feel old when I go every year now, but feel uplifted by the fact that there are still acts from the decade I grew up in, and hopefully the Big Day Out will continue to be the type of festival it has been over the years and not be so mainstream. It would be sad if it did give in to popular culture.
The rest of the weekend was spent on the home front. Plenty of gardening to do on Saturday and then a day out in the boat with my dad on Sunday. Pics are up on Flickr! if you want to have a gawk.
Till next time peoples, avagoodone and rock out with your cock out....... just don't get arrested :)
